Pine Pollen vs Pine Bark (Which One Men Take for Testosterone)

Pine pollen and pine bark extract come from opposite ends of the tree. Here is what each one is, what the studies in men measured, and which one men take for testosterone and drive.

Pine pollen vs pine bark comes up because both say "pine" on the label and both sit on the same supplement shelf. They come from opposite ends of the tree. Bark extract is a polyphenol extract stripped from the outer bark of one pine species. Pine pollen is the male pollen the tree releases each spring, and it is the one men take for testosterone and drive. If that is your goal, this page will save you buying the wrong bottle.

Is pine pollen and pine bark the same thing?

No. Pine pollen comes from the small male cones that open on the branches in spring. Each grain carries two air sacs that let it ride the wind to a female cone. Pine bark extract is made from the thick outer bark of the trunk, which is ground and extracted to pull out a family of plant compounds called procyanidins.

So one is the reproductive part of the tree and the other is its armour. They are harvested differently, processed differently and studied for different things. A man who searches "is pine pollen and pine bark the same thing" after seeing both in a forum thread usually wants to know which one belongs in his morning. The short answer for testosterone and drive is pollen.

What pine bark extract is

The best known bark extract is Pycnogenol. It is made from the bark of French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), grown in Les Landes de Gascogne along the coast of southwest France. According to a 2024 review by Weichmann and Rohdewald in Frontiers in Nutrition, the extract is standardised to 70 ± 5% procyanidins, which meets the United States Pharmacopeia specification for maritime pine extract. The rest is mostly catechin, epicatechin, taxifolin and phenolic acids. The same review points out that Pycnogenol results "cannot be extrapolated to other pine bark extracts", because each extract has its own composition.

Other bark extracts exist. Enzogenol is a water extract of Pinus radiata bark from New Zealand, reported in Food and Chemical Toxicology (2012) to contain more than 80% proanthocyanidins plus 1 to 2% taxifolin. That makes it the same species as Mara's pollen, taken from a different part of the tree, with a different result in the bottle.

What men use pine bark extract for

Most published work on Pycnogenol in men looks at blood flow, and it is usually paired with the amino acid L-arginine, as in a 2003 study by Stanislavov and Nikolova in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. Those studies were built around circulation and arginine. Testosterone was the subject of other research, on the pollen.

Total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL in 8 weeks.

Pine pollen vs pine bark extract for testosterone and drive

Pine pollen has the hormone story bark does not. In 1971 the researcher Šaden-Krehula isolated testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione from Scots pine pollen. It was the first plant in which those compounds were found.

Human work followed decades later. In a 2024 pilot by Wolkodoff and colleagues, 10 men aged 47 to 78 took pine pollen for 8 weeks. Their average total testosterone went from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL, and their qADAM score (a questionnaire on low-testosterone symptoms in ageing men) went from 23.9 to 31.7. A 2025 pilot in 11 men recorded free testosterone going from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL, while SHBG, the protein that binds testosterone and keeps it out of circulation, fell.

What men report lines up with those numbers. The most common reports are stronger morning wood and more drive, in the gym and in bed. That is why pine pollen is the one men reach for, and why most of the questions in our full guide to pine pollen come from men. In China the pollen, 松花粉 (song hua fen), has been recorded in herbal texts since the Tang dynasty and is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition).

Side by side

  • Part of the tree. Pollen: the male cone, released in spring. Bark: the outer trunk.
  • Species. Pycnogenol: Pinus pinaster. Enzogenol: Pinus radiata bark. Mara's Pine Pollen: Pinus radiata pollen.
  • Main compounds named. Bark: procyanidins (70 ± 5% in Pycnogenol). Pollen: testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione first isolated in 1971, and about 13% protein (Zhao, 1996).
  • What the men's studies measured. Bark: blood flow, paired with L-arginine. Pollen: total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG and qADAM scores.

If your reason for buying is testosterone and drive, the bark studies are measuring something else. Pine pollen is the part of the tree studied for that.

Why Mara makes it as a spagyric tincture

The pollen wall is tough, which is why Mara uses cracked-cell pollen, where the wall has been broken open before extraction. The pollen is wild-harvested from Pinus radiata and extracted in alcohol. Then the minerals left behind in the spent pollen are returned to the liquid. That last step is what spagyric means, and it puts the whole plant back in the bottle.

Add to bag

Powder clumps in a shaker and sits open to air every time you scoop. A tincture stays sealed in dark Miron glass, which keeps light off the extract. If you are comparing bottles, dark amber glass is a step in the right direction. Dark Miron glass is the gold standard, and it is what Mara uses.

The routine is short. Take 1 to 2 droppers a day and hold it under the tongue for 20 to 30 seconds, then swallow. Take it first thing, before coffee, or in the car park before training. It tastes soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness. You can also stir it into water or a smoothie. A 50 ml bottle lasts 30 to 50 days at that dose, and it fits in a gym bag.

Questions men ask about pine pollen and pine bark

Is Pycnogenol made from pine pollen?

No. Pycnogenol is made from the bark of French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) and standardised to 70 ± 5% procyanidins. Pine pollen comes from the male cones of the tree.

Which one do men take for testosterone?

Pine pollen. Testosterone was first isolated from Scots pine pollen in 1971, and the 2024 Wolkodoff pilot recorded total testosterone in 10 men going from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL over 8 weeks.

Does Mara sell pine bark extract?

No. Mara's pine product is the pollen, made as a spagyric tincture, because pollen is the part of the tree men buy for testosterone and drive.

What species is Mara's Pine Pollen?

Pinus radiata. The pollen is wild-harvested, cracked-cell and made into a spagyric tincture in a 50 ml dark Miron glass dropper bottle.

Wild-harvested. Cracked-cell. Spagyric.

Mara Pine Pollen is a spagyric tincture of Pinus radiata pollen. 1 to 2 droppers a day, and a bottle lasts 30 to 50 days.
