If you're a man looking into pine pollen for men, you've probably seen it described as a plant source of testosterone. That reputation goes back more than 50 years, to the first time testosterone was ever found in a plant, and men around the world have been taking it for testosterone support ever since.

Why men look it up

Pine pollen has a reputation as a plant androgen. It started in 1971, when Šaden-Krehula and colleagues isolated testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione from Scots pine pollen. It was the first time these hormones had been found in any plant. Men looking for something plant-based to add to their routine have been reaching for it ever since.

It also has history behind it. In China it's song hua fen, recorded in herbal texts since the Tang dynasty and listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. In Korea it goes into tea cakes and a honey drink. So it isn't a new product dreamed up for a marketplace listing.

What the research shows

Research in men backs this up. In 2024, Wolkodoff and colleagues published a pilot study in the Annals of Clinical and Medical Case Reports. Ten men aged 47 to 78 took a pine pollen tincture morning and evening for 8 weeks. Their average total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL, an increase of 85.9 ng/dL, and their scores on the qADAM, a standard questionnaire on the symptoms men notice when testosterone runs low, improved from 23.9 to 31.7. No adverse effects were reported. The authors put their conclusion plainly: "An orally consumed proprietary pine pollen extract increased total testosterone levels in older men over an eight-week prospective clinical trial."

A follow-up study in 2025 looked at 11 younger men, aged 25 to 50, on the same routine. Their free testosterone, the share that isn't bound up and is available to the body, rose from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL, while SHBG, the protein that binds testosterone, fell.

Men were ahead of the research. Around the world they have been buying and using pine pollen for testosterone support for years, and the changes they report most often are stronger morning wood and more overall drive.

Species matters. The 1971 discovery was made in Scots pine pollen, and the 2024 study used a Chinese pine. Mara's Pine Pollen is wild-harvested Pinus radiata, named on the label so you know exactly what you're taking. The full history is in our pine pollen guide.

Taste

Powder is bland and so fine it sticks to everything. Capsules taste of nothing. A tincture gives you the alcohol first, then the plant. Mara's Pine Pollen is soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness.

What should a man check before buying?

  • The species. A label that says only "pine pollen" doesn't tell you which of more than 100 pines it came from.
  • Wild-harvested or from planted stands.
  • Cracked-cell stated. The pollen wall is extremely tough, and cracked-cell means it has been broken.
  • For tinctures, spagyric or simple extract.
  • A clear list of what's in the bottle.

Mara's Pine Pollen

Mara's is a spagyric tincture made from wild-harvested, cracked-cell Pinus radiata pollen. The pollen is extracted, then the minerals left behind are returned to the liquid, so the whole plant ends up in the bottle. Simple ingredients: premium quality extract. It comes in a 50 ml dropper bottle that sits in a gym bag, your home apothecary next to the tea, or on a desk.

Pine pollen for men, day to day

The easy way to take it is to tie it to something you already do every morning. A tincture makes that simple to do. The usual ways:

  • Under the tongue. One or two droppers, held for 20 to 30 seconds, then swallowed. It takes less than a minute, and it's the fastest and most efficient way to absorb it.
  • In the morning coffee. A dropper stirred into the first cup.
  • In water, tea, juice or a smoothie. Some men add it to the shake they already make.
  • With training. Some men take it at the same point in their training routine each day, before a session or with a post-workout drink, because tying it to something fixed means they don't forget it.

Mara's directions are 1 to 2 droppers a day. At that rate a 50 ml bottle lasts 30 to 50 days, so one bottle covers about a month or more.
