Pine Pollen vs Maca (What Men Should Know Before Choosing)

Maca is a root vegetable from the Peruvian Andes. Pine pollen is the plant where testosterone was first found in 1971. Here's how they compare for men.

Pine pollen vs maca comes up for most men at the same point: they've decided to add one plant to the routine, they've read that both are "for men", and they want to know which one to buy. They come from opposite ends of the plant world. Maca is a root vegetable grown high in the Peruvian Andes. Pine pollen is the dust a pine tree releases each spring, and it's the plant where testosterone was first found. If testosterone is the reason you're reading, that difference decides it.

Pine pollen vs maca, starting with where they grow

Maca is Lepidium meyenii, a member of the mustard and cabbage family (Brassicaceae). It grows in a narrow band of the Central Andes in Peru, at 3,800 to 4,800 metres, where few other crops survive. The part people eat is the swollen hypocotyl, a bulb that looks like a small turnip. In Peru it's eaten cooked, mixed with honey or fruit, baked into bread, or brewed into a sweet drink. For export it's dried and ground into powder.

Pine pollen comes from the male cones of the pine. Each spring the cones release clouds of yellow pollen, and every grain carries two small air sacs that let it travel on the wind. Mara's Pine Pollen is wild-harvested from Pinus radiata. The pollen wall is tough, so it's cracked open before extraction. That's what "cracked cell" means.

Both have long food histories. Pine pollen is 松花粉, song hua fen, in Chinese, recorded in Chinese herbal texts since the Tang dynasty and listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition). In Korea it goes into songhwa dasik, pressed tea cakes, and songhwa-milsu, a pollen and honey drink.

What's in each one

In 1971 the researcher Šaden-Krehula isolated testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione from Scots pine pollen. It was the first time any of the three had been found in a plant, and it's why men's interest in pine pollen has lasted for half a century. Zhao, writing in 1996, measured the pollen's protein at about 13%.

Maca's profile looks like a root vegetable's. The Drugs.com natural products monograph lists amino acids, minerals, vitamins, sterols, protein, fibre and fatty acids, and states that maca does not directly act on androgen receptors. No hormones appear on that list. Maca's reputation with men comes from how they describe it after weeks of use.

Total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL in 8 weeks.

Wolkodoff and colleagues, 2024 pilot study, 10 men aged 47 to 78

Maca vs pine pollen for men, in the research

Maca's best-known human trial came out of Cayetano Heredia University in Lima. Gonzales and colleagues (Andrologia, 2002) gave 57 healthy men aged 21 to 56 either 1,500 mg or 3,000 mg of gelatinised maca a day, or a placebo, for 12 weeks. From week 8, men on maca reported more sexual desire than the placebo group. The researchers checked blood work too, and the change in desire was independent of serum testosterone and estradiol, which stayed where they were. A second paper from the same group (Journal of Endocrinology, 2003) reported no change in testosterone, LH, FSH, prolactin or estradiol in men taking maca.

So maca's trials measured desire, and testosterone didn't move. Pine pollen's research was set up to measure testosterone, and it moved:

  • Wolkodoff and colleagues, 2024: 10 men aged 47 to 78 over 8 weeks. Average total testosterone went from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL. Scores on the qADAM questionnaire (energy, drive and mood in ageing men) went from 23.9 to 31.7.
  • A 2025 follow-up pilot in 11 men: free testosterone went from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL, and SHBG, the protein that binds testosterone in the blood, fell.

Men who take pine pollen daily describe the same two things most often. Stronger morning wood, and more drive through the day.

For a man whose question is testosterone, the choice is clear. Pine pollen carries the 1971 finding and two pilots that tracked testosterone in men directly.

A spoonful of powder or a few drops

Maca is sold mostly as powder, taken by the heaped teaspoon. The trial doses of 1.5 to 3 grams a day mean a scoop every morning, stirred into a smoothie, oats or coffee. The tub gets opened to the air and light every time you scoop.

Mara's Pine Pollen is a tincture in a 50 ml dark Miron glass dropper bottle. You put a dropper under your tongue, hold it 20 to 30 seconds and swallow. It tastes soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness. If you'd rather drink it, it goes into water, juice, tea or a smoothie. One to two droppers a day, and a bottle lasts 30 to 50 days.

It's also spagyric. The pollen is extracted, then the minerals left behind are returned to the liquid, so the whole plant ends up in the bottle. Dark Miron glass keeps light off the extract between uses. If you're comparing bottles from anyone, dark amber glass is a step in the right direction, and dark Miron glass is the gold standard. It's the glass Mara uses.

Pine pollen or maca, if you're picking one

Pick pine pollen. It has the testosterone research, the men in the 2024 study were 47 to 78, and it's the easier habit to keep. A habit you keep for 8 weeks is the one that shows you anything, and the pilot ran for 8 weeks.

Here's what the day looks like. Alarm goes off, a dropper under the tongue while the kettle boils, swallowed before the coffee's poured. Nothing to measure, no shaker to rinse, no powder on the bench. The bottle sits in a gym bag or a desk drawer, so the evening dropper happens wherever you are. Thirty seconds, twice a day, and the bottle goes back in your pocket.

Pine pollen and maca together

Plenty of men stack them, and men's blends that put pine pollen, maca and shilajit in one product are sold online. In a stack each one keeps its own slot. Maca goes into the morning smoothie with the oats and protein. Pine pollen goes under the tongue as the daily drop, morning and evening, and it travels with you when the blender stays home.

Some men start with pine pollen alone for the first 8 weeks, the length of the 2024 pilot, so they know what it's doing on its own before adding anything. Questions people ask

Does maca contain testosterone?

The published lists of maca's compounds include sterols, amino acids and fibre, with no hormones. In Gonzales and colleagues' 2002 and 2003 trials in men, serum testosterone didn't change on maca. Testosterone was first isolated from a plant in pine pollen, in 1971.

Which is better for men, pine pollen or maca?

For a man focused on testosterone, pine pollen. Its two pilot studies in men tracked testosterone directly, with total testosterone going from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL over 8 weeks in the 2024 study.

Can I take pine pollen and maca together?

Many men do, with maca in a morning smoothie and pine pollen under the tongue as a separate daily drop.

How long did the maca and pine pollen studies run?

The Gonzales maca trial ran 12 weeks, with the change in desire showing from week 8. The 2024 pine pollen pilot ran 8 weeks.

What does Pine Pollen tincture taste like?

Soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness. Most men take it straight under the tongue.
