Most men asking when to take pine pollen have already bought a bottle, or they're one click away. They know what pine pollen is. What they want is a time on the clock: first thing in the morning or at night, before the gym or after, with breakfast or without, every day or with days off. The men in the 2024 pilot study on pine pollen tincture had a fixed schedule, and it's a good one to copy.

If you want the plant's background first (the 1971 discovery in Scots pine pollen, song hua fen in Chinese herbal texts), read our complete guide to pine pollen.

When to take pine pollen, by time of day

Morning is the slot most men pick, and there is a plain reason they give for it. A man's testosterone runs on a daily rhythm. In 2009, Brambilla, Matsumoto, Araujo and McKinlay published data in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism showing that in men aged 30 to 40, testosterone at 4 pm was about 20 to 25% lower than at 8 am. By age 70 the gap shrank to roughly 10%. Men who take pine pollen like to line their first dose up with the high point of that curve, so it goes in before coffee, at the bathroom sink, alongside brushing their teeth.

The men in the 2024 study did the same. Neil Wolkodoff and colleagues gave each man 1 mL of pine pollen tincture a day, split into half a dropper in the morning and half a dropper in the evening, held under the tongue.

That split is the answer to the morning or night question for most men. Take the main dose early. If you take a second, have it in the early evening, after work or with dinner, and keep the late night for sleep.

Before training

Men who lift often move one dose to the half hour before a session. Several herbal guides on pine pollen tinctures suggest about 30 minutes before exercise, and a dropper is quick enough to take in the car park or the locker room. On a training day that can be your second dose. On rest days, go back to the morning and evening split.

Empty stomach or with food?

The tincture doesn't need a meal. Most men take it first thing, before breakfast, because that's when the bottle is in front of them and the mouth is empty. Hold it under the tongue for 20 to 30 seconds, then swallow. If you'd rather drink it, stir the dropper into water, tea, juice or a smoothie. Food in your stomach doesn't change the routine, so pick whichever moment you'll remember every day.

How often to take pine pollen

The product page says 1 to 2 droppers a day. That is the daily amount. The bigger question men ask is whether to take it seven days a week or to cycle it.

Cycling is what men and herbalists most often do with the tincture. The two schedules that come up again and again are five days on and two days off, and three weeks on with one week off. The 2024 study used the first one. Each man took the tincture for five days, stopped for two, then started again the following week, for eight weeks.

For most men the five-and-two rhythm fits the week without thinking about it. Take it Monday to Friday, leave the bottle in the cupboard on Saturday and Sunday. It's also the schedule behind the numbers men quote from that study, so it's the one we'd copy.

Powder users tend to take theirs every day as a food. With a tincture made for the androgen side of the pollen, the on and off pattern is the more common choice.

Total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL in 8 weeks.

A simple daily rhythm with the bottle

  • On waking: one dropper under the tongue, held 20 to 30 seconds, then swallowed.
  • Training days: a second dropper about 30 minutes before the session, or stirred into your water bottle.
  • Rest days: if you take a second dropper, have it in the early evening.
  • Saturday and Sunday: off, if you follow the five-and-two cycle.

At 1 to 2 droppers a day, a 50 ml bottle lasts 30 to 50 days. On the five-and-two schedule it goes further, because you skip eight days a month. Eight weeks of five-and-two is 40 dosing days, so one bottle covers it at a dropper a day and two bottles cover it at two droppers a day.

The taste is soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness. Nothing you need to chase with water.

Why the tincture makes timing easy

A schedule only works if you keep it at 6 am and in a gym bag. With powder you need a spoon, a shaker and a drink, and the fine yellow pollen clumps on top of cold water. A dropper takes a few seconds and nothing else. The bottle sits next to your toothbrush, goes in a jacket pocket for the drive to work, and rides in the side pocket of a training bag.

Mara's Pine Pollen is a spagyric tincture of wild-harvested, cracked-cell Pinus radiata pollen. The pollen is extracted, then the minerals left behind are returned to the liquid, so the whole plant ends up in the bottle. Simple ingredients: premium quality extract. It's kept in dark Miron glass, which keeps light off the extract between doses. Dark amber glass is a step in the right direction; Miron is the gold standard, and it's what we use. The 2024 and 2025 pilot studies both gave the men a tincture under the tongue, so the form you're taking is the form the research used.

Give it the full 8 weeks

Eight weeks is the window men commit to, and it comes straight from the study. In the Wolkodoff 2024 pilot, ten men aged 47 to 78 followed the morning and evening, five-and-two schedule for eight weeks. Average total testosterone went from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL, and scores on the qADAM questionnaire (drive, energy, erections) rose from 23.9 to 31.7. Men taking pine pollen most often report stronger morning wood and more drive as the weeks go on.

So set the start date, put the bottle where you'll see it at 7 am, and mark the end of week eight. For what men think of the tincture once they've finished a few bottles, see our pine pollen review.

Questions men ask about timing

What is the best time to take pine pollen?

Most men take their first dropper in the morning, when testosterone sits at its daily high. A second dropper, if you take one, goes before training or in the early evening.

Can I take pine pollen tincture at night?

Yes, in the early evening. The men in the 2024 study took half their daily amount in the evening, and most men keep that dose to dinner time rather than right before bed.

How often should I take pine pollen?

1 to 2 droppers a day is the product page direction. Many men take it five days on and two days off, the schedule used in the 2024 pilot.

How long does a bottle last?

A 50 ml bottle lasts 30 to 50 days at 1 to 2 droppers a day, and longer with weekends off.
