Pine pollen vs moringa is a question men ask once they've gone past protein powder and fish oil and start looking at plant "superfoods". Both get sold under that label, both come from trees, and both show up on the same supplement shelves. One is the leaf of a tree from northern India that ends up in smoothies. The other is the pollen of the pine, the first plant in which testosterone was ever found, and it's the one built for men.
Where each one comes from
Moringa is the leaf of Moringa oleifera, a fast-growing tree native to the sub-Himalayan foothills of northern India. It's often called the drumstick tree after its long, ribbed seed pods, which hang straight down and can reach 45 cm. The tree can put on 3 metres in its first year. Across South and Southeast Asia the young pods are cooked as a vegetable and the leaves go into curries and soups, and dried leaves are ground into the green powder sold in the West.
Pine pollen comes from the male cones of the pine. Each spring the small male cones release clouds of yellow pollen, and every grain carries two tiny air sacs that let it drift on the wind. Mara's Pine Pollen is wild-harvested from Pinus radiata. The pollen wall is tough, so it's cracked open first, which is what "cracked cell" on the label means.
A leaf you eat as a green and the pollen of a conifer end up with different research, different tastes and different places in a man's day.
What moringa is known for
Moringa's reputation is as a leafy green with a lot packed into it. Feedipedia, the animal feed database run by INRAE, CIRAD, AFZ and the FAO, averages dried moringa leaves at 26.8% crude protein across 35 samples, with 25.6 g of calcium per kilo of dry matter. Those numbers explain why it gets compared to spinach and kale, and why it's spooned into smoothies by people who want more greens without eating a salad.
That's the job moringa does well. It's a green.
Total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL in 8 weeks.
What pine pollen is known for, and why men look it up
Pine pollen has a different history. In 1971, the researcher Šaden-Krehula isolated testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione from Scots pine pollen. It was the first time those hormones had been found in a plant. That finding is the reason pine pollen gets talked about in men's circles in a way moringa never has.
The pollen also brings its own nutrition. Zhao, writing in 1996, measured its protein at about 13%.
Then come the men. Two small pilot studies have looked at pine pollen in men directly:
- Wolkodoff and colleagues, 2024: 10 men over 8 weeks. Average total testosterone went from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL, and qADAM scores (a questionnaire on energy, drive and mood in ageing men) went from 23.9 to 31.7.
- A 2025 follow-up pilot in 11 men: free testosterone went from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL, and SHBG (the protein that binds testosterone in the blood) fell.
Men who take pine pollen daily tend to describe the same things. Stronger morning wood and more drive are the two that come up most.
Pine pollen has a long record in Asia too. In Chinese it's 松花粉, song hua fen, written up in Chinese herbal texts since the Tang dynasty and listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition). In Korea it goes into songhwa dasik, pressed tea cakes, and songhwa-milsu, a pollen and honey drink.
Pine pollen vs moringa in taste and form
Moringa powder tastes grassy, like dried spinach with a bitter edge, and it's taken by the spoonful. Most men stir it into a smoothie or shake to get it down. It clumps in water, sticks to the glass and turns everything green.
Mara's Pine Pollen is a tincture. It tastes soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness. You put a dropper under your tongue, hold it for 20 to 30 seconds and swallow. That's the whole routine. If you'd rather drink it, stir it into water, coffee, juice or a smoothie.
It's also spagyric. The pollen is extracted, then the minerals left behind are returned to the liquid, so the whole plant ends up in the bottle. And it lives in dark Miron glass, which keeps light off the extract. If you're comparing bottles from anyone, dark amber glass is a step in the right direction, and dark Miron glass is the gold standard.
A tub of powder sits open to the air every time you scoop. A 50 ml dropper bottle stays sealed between uses, fits in a gym bag or a desk drawer, and at 1 to 2 droppers a day lasts 30 to 50 days.
Pine pollen or moringa for men?
For a man choosing one, pine pollen is the pick. Moringa is a green, and you can get greens from your dinner plate. Nothing on your dinner plate carries the 1971 testosterone finding or two pilot studies run in men. The research on pine pollen was run in men, most of the people buying it are men, and it's the bottle they keep by the coffee machine.
A typical day with it looks like this. Wake up, a dropper under the tongue before coffee, done in half a minute. No shaker, no green film on your teeth, nothing to measure. On training days some men take their second dropper in water on the way to the gym.

Add to bagPine pollen and moringa together
Some men take both, and the two fit into the day without overlapping. Moringa goes into the morning smoothie with the fruit and the protein. Pine pollen goes under the tongue, morning or evening, as the daily drop. Different jobs, different moments.
If you only have room for one bottle in your routine, make it the one that was studied in men. For the full story of the plant, from the cones to the research, read our complete guide to pine pollen. For what it's like to take day to day, see our honest pine pollen review.

Questions people ask
Is moringa vs pine pollen a fair comparison?

Which has more protein, pine pollen or moringa?
Dried moringa leaf averages 26.8% crude protein in Feedipedia's data. Pine pollen measures about 13% (Zhao, 1996). Men don't take either one for protein.
