The best osha root tincture is the one whose label lets you check what's in the bottle. Osha (Ligusticum porteri) is slow-growing, almost always wild-harvested and easy to confuse with other plants, so the label matters more than it would for a common kitchen herb. A good bottle names the species, the part of the plant, where it came from and how strong the extract is.

What to look for in the best osha root tincture

Every point below is something you can check before you buy, from the label or the product page. None of them needs a lab.

The Latin name is on the label

Coverage of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia's 2018 osha monograph reports that six chemically similar species share the common name oshá. Only Ligusticum porteri is listed in Herbs of Commerce, the standard reference for botanical names in trade. A bottle that says "osha" and nothing else could hold any of them. If you want the background on the plant itself, our guide to osha root covers where it grows and why it's called bear root.

It says root

The root is the part of osha that people have used for centuries, and it's where the plant's strong celery smell sits. The label should say the extract is made from the root.

Sourcing that takes the At-Risk status seriously

United Plant Savers lists osha as At-Risk. Cultivation has had limited success, so almost every bottle on the market started as a wild plant, often one more than 10 years old. Look for a seller who tells you where the root was collected. A brand that names a region has at least traced its supply that far.

Extraction strength is stated

Tinctures are often labelled with a ratio such as 1:5, meaning one part dried root by weight to five parts liquid by volume. A stated ratio lets you compare two bottles on equal terms. Where no ratio is given, look at what the label does say about the extract and the daily amount.

Origin is stated

Osha grows at roughly 1,500 to 3,500 metres, from Northern Mexico up through the Rocky Mountains. Origin tells you something about the supply chain and about the plant's growing conditions. A label that states a country or mountain region is more useful than one that says nothing.

The taste is sharp and earthy

Osha root has a pungent celery flavour, earthy underneath, with a sweet note some people compare to licorice. A tincture made with plenty of root should carry that bite. If a tincture tastes of alcohol and little else, it's fair to ask the seller about strength.

Glass, with a dropper

Tinctures keep best in glass, and darker glass keeps light off the liquid. Dark amber glass is a step in the right direction, but the gold standard is dark Miron glass, which is what we use for Bear Root. A dropper cap lets you measure a consistent amount each day.

Bottle size and days of use

Bottle sizes range widely. Divide the volume by the daily amount on the label to see how many days a bottle actually lasts, which is a fairer comparison than size alone.

Why a tincture is the practical form

The compounds researchers study in osha are oily ones. Z-ligustilide and diligustilide, and the aromatic oil that carries them, dissolve readily in alcohol and poorly in water. That's why the lab work on osha is done with alcohol extracts and root oil. The 2008 University of Texas at El Paso study that tested osha against the tuberculosis bacterium used an alcohol extract of the root.

Z-ligustilide also breaks down when it's exposed to air and light, so dried root and powder lose some of it on the shelf. A tincture keeps the extract sealed in liquid inside a dark bottle, and a dropper or two is all a day takes.

Osha stopped more than half the growth of the TB bacterium at the lowest concentration tested.

How Mara's Bear Root measures on each point

Here is what the Bear Root product page states, point by point.

  • Species: Ligusticum porteri, named in the product title.
  • Plant part: it's sold as an osha root tincture, made from the root.
  • Sourcing and origin: osha is described as a mountain plant of Northern Mexico, known as bear root.
  • Extract: the ingredient line reads "Simple ingredients: premium quality extract." It's a tincture, so the extract is made in alcohol, and the page lists a daily amount of 1 to 2 droppers.
  • Taste: earthy and warming, with a sharp, celery-like bite from the root.
  • Bottle: 50 ml dark Miron glass, with a dropper.
  • Days of use: 30 to 50 days at 1 to 2 droppers a day.

How to take an osha root tincture

Hold 1 to 2 droppers under the tongue for 20 to 30 seconds, then swallow. If the celery bite is too sharp on its own, stir the droppers into water, tea, juice or a smoothie instead. Warm water or tea softens the taste the most. Taking it at the same time each day makes a bottle easy to track against the 30 to 50 days it should last.

Questions people ask

Is osha root tincture the same as bear root tincture?

Yes. Bear root is another common name for osha, Ligusticum porteri. The Latin name on the label is what confirms which plant you're buying.

Does osha root tincture contain alcohol?

Most do, since a tincture is an alcohol extract. Mara's Bear Root contains alcohol.

How long does a 50 ml bottle of osha tincture last?

At 1 to 2 droppers a day, a 50 ml bottle of Bear Root lasts 30 to 50 days.

Why take osha as a tincture rather than a tea?

The compounds researchers study in osha dissolve in alcohol far better than in water, and a sealed tincture protects them from air and light. You can still stir a tincture into hot water if you like it as a tea.

What should osha tincture taste like?

Sharp and celery-like, with an earthy base. Bear Root is also described as warming.
