Pine Pollen vs Shilajit (What Men Should Know Before Choosing)

Shilajit is a mountain resin, pine pollen is the pollen of a pine tree. Here is how they compare for men, from what's inside to how each is taken day to day.

Open TikTok or Instagram this year and some guy is stirring a black blob of shilajit into a mug. A lot of the men searching "pine pollen vs shilajit" already have that jar on the kitchen bench. They want to know what pine pollen is, how it compares, and whether it belongs in the routine too.

Here is the straight comparison, man to man. One is a mineral resin scraped from mountain rock. The other is the pollen of a pine tree, and it's where testosterone was first found in a plant.

Pine pollen vs shilajit, side by side

  • Shilajit is a sticky black resin that seeps out of rock crevices high in the Himalaya, Altai and Caucasus mountains. Pine pollen is the yellow dust released by male pine cones each spring.
  • Shilajit is mostly humic and fulvic acids plus trace minerals. Pine pollen carries plant androgens (testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione), first isolated from Scots pine pollen in 1971.
  • Pine pollen has two published pilot studies in men, from 2024 and 2025, that measured testosterone directly.
  • Shilajit resin is weighed out as a pea-sized lump and dissolved in warm water. Pine pollen tincture is 1 to 2 droppers under the tongue.
  • Shilajit tastes bitter, smoky and mineral. Mara's Pine Pollen tastes soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness.
  • A resin jar stays home. A 50 ml dropper bottle goes in your jacket pocket or gym bag.

What shilajit is

Shilajit is a brown to black, tar-like substance that oozes from sedimentary rock in high mountain ranges. Most of it comes from the Himalaya (India, Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan) and the Altai Mountains of Russia and Mongolia, where it's sold as mumijo. The Sanskrit name translates roughly as "conqueror of the rocks."

It forms from plant matter that breaks down over centuries and gets pressed into the rock. Raw shilajit is dug out, dissolved in water, filtered to strip out stone and debris, then dried back down in the sun or with low heat. What's left is the purified resin. Powders, capsules, liquids and gummies are all made from that resin.

Its main components are fulvic acid, humic acid, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and dozens of trace minerals. ConsumerLab's testing puts purified resin at about 6 to 7% fulvic acid and concentrated extracts at 60 to 80%. Ayurvedic practitioners in India have used it for centuries, and that history is a big part of why it blew up on social media.

Free testosterone rose from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL.

2025 pilot study, 11 men

Pine pollen comes from a tree, every spring

Each spring the male cones on a pine tree release clouds of yellow pollen. Under a microscope every grain has two small air sacs that let it ride the wind. The grain wall is tough, so good pine pollen is "cracked cell," meaning that wall has been broken open.

In 1971 the researcher Šaden-Krehula isolated testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione from Scots pine pollen. It was the first time those androgens were found in a plant. That paper is the reason men started paying attention to pine pollen.

The tradition is older than the lab work. In China pine pollen is called 松花粉 (song hua fen). It has been recorded in Chinese herbal texts since the Tang dynasty and is listed in the 2020 Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Korean families press it into songhwa dasik tea cakes and stir it with honey into songhwa-milsu.

Pine pollen testosterone results in men

Two small pilot studies have measured what pine pollen did in men.

In Wolkodoff et al. (2024), 10 men took pine pollen for 8 weeks. Their average total testosterone went from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL. Their qADAM score, a questionnaire that tracks male energy, mood and sexual function, went from 23.9 to 31.7.

A 2025 pilot in 11 men measured free testosterone, the portion your body can use right away. It rose from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL, and SHBG (the protein that binds testosterone and holds it back) fell.

Outside the studies, the reports men give are consistent. Stronger morning wood. More drive. Those are the two things you'll hear most from men a few weeks in.

How each one is taken

Shilajit resin

Resin is dense and sticky, close to cold tar. You scoop a pea-sized piece (about 300 to 500 mg) with the little spoon in the jar, drop it into warm water or tea, and stir until it dissolves. It's a two-minute ritual that works fine at the kitchen bench.

Pine pollen drops

Fill the dropper, squeeze 1 to 2 droppers under your tongue, hold it 20 to 30 seconds and swallow. You can also stir it into water, coffee, juice or a protein shake. A bottle lasts 30 to 50 days at that rate.

Taste

Shilajit is bitter and smoky with a mineral edge, which is why so many men take it in honey or milk. Mara's Pine Pollen is soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness. Most men take it straight under the tongue.

Why men pick pine pollen as the daily base

Plenty of men who started on shilajit add pine pollen, and some switch to it as their everyday bottle. These are the reasons they give.

It's a whole-plant extract. Mara's Pine Pollen is spagyric: the pollen is extracted, then the minerals left behind are returned to the liquid, so the whole plant ends up in the bottle. A standard tincture leaves that mineral part behind in the filter.

The pollen is wild-harvested, cracked-cell Pinus radiata. Breaking the cell wall before extraction means the liquid carries what's inside the grain.

Nothing to weigh, warm or stir. The dose is a dropper. You can take it in the car park before training, at your desk at 3 pm, or in a hotel room with no kettle.

It travels. The 50 ml bottle sits in a jacket pocket, a wash bag or the side pocket of a gym bag.

The glass keeps it fresh. Light breaks down plant extracts in the bottle. Dark amber glass is a step in the right direction, but the gold standard is dark Miron glass, which keeps light off the extract and adds significant longevity to its quality and potency. That's what Mara bottles Pine Pollen in.

Can you take pine pollen and shilajit together?

Many men do. A common pattern is shilajit in the morning coffee or tea at home, and pine pollen in the pocket for the rest of the day. Others keep the resin for weekends and run the dropper bottle daily, because it's the one that comes with them.

Questions people ask

Is pine pollen or shilajit better for testosterone?

Pine pollen has testosterone measured in men in two pilot studies. Total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL in Wolkodoff et al. (2024), and free testosterone rose in a 2025 pilot. It also contains plant androgens, first isolated from pine pollen in 1971.

What are the pine pollen benefits for men?

Men most often report stronger morning wood and more drive. In the 2024 pilot, qADAM scores rose from 23.9 to 31.7 over 8 weeks.

Is shilajit a plant?

No. It's a mineral resin that seeps from mountain rock, formed from plant matter that broke down over centuries. Pine pollen comes straight from a living tree.

How long does a bottle of pine pollen tincture last?

At 1 to 2 droppers a day, a 50 ml bottle lasts 30 to 50 days.
