A pine pollen supplement is the yellow pollen that male pine cones release each spring, dried and sold in one of five forms. Men buy it for the same reason men have kept it in the cupboard for centuries. In China it is 松花粉 (song hua fen), recorded in herbal texts since the Tang dynasty and still listed in the 2020 Chinese Pharmacopoeia. What changes from one bottle to the next is the species, how the pollen was processed and what you have to do with it every morning. That last part decides whether you are still taking it in week six.
If you want the plant itself first (the two air sacs on each grain, the hormone chemistry, the Korean tea cakes), our guide to pine pollen starts there.
The forms on the market
Every pine pollen product starts as the same fine powder shaken from male cones. After that it goes one of these ways.
- Raw powder. A bag of loose yellow pollen. You stir it into a shake, yoghurt or water, and it clumps and coats the glass. The taste is grassy and dry.
- Capsules. The same powder in gel or veggie shells. No mess, though you are swallowing a handful a day and the pollen sits in a shell with air around it.
- Tablets. Pollen pressed with binders to hold the shape. Read the ingredient list to see what else is in them.
- Tincture. The pollen soaked in an alcohol extract, then strained. You get drops from a dropper bottle and nothing to mix.
- Spagyric tincture. A tincture made in two stages. The pollen is extracted, then the minerals left in the spent material are recovered and returned to the liquid, so the whole plant ends up in the bottle.
Powder and capsules are where most men start, because that is what the big marketplaces push. They are also where most men stop. A bag of powder in the kitchen means a scoop and a shaker to rinse every day. A dropper bottle asks for ten seconds.
What to check on a pine pollen supplement label
Most listings say "pine pollen" and little else. A good label answers these questions in print.
- Species named. Look for a Latin name such as Pinus radiata, Pinus massoniana or Pinus sylvestris. "Pine tree pollen" with no species tells you nothing about the source.
- Cracked cell. The pollen wall is tough. "Cracked cell" or "broken cell wall" means it has been opened. If the label says neither, assume it hasn't been.
- Wild-harvested. Pollen collected from wild trees, with a named region or country, beats an anonymous bulk lot.
- How it's extracted. A tincture label should say it is an extract and how it was made. Spagyric is the most complete method, because the minerals go back into the liquid.
- The glass. Clear glass and plastic let light straight in. Dark amber glass is a step in the right direction. The gold standard is dark Miron glass, which keeps light off the extract, and it is what Mara uses.
A product that ticks all five is rare.
Total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL in 8 weeks.
What the 2024 and 2025 pilot studies found
Two small human studies in men were published in the Annals of Clinical and Medical Case Reports. Both used a pine pollen tincture, taken under the tongue as half a dropper morning and evening, five days on and two days off, for eight weeks.
In the 2024 study, Neil Wolkodoff and colleagues followed 10 men aged 47 to 78. Average total testosterone went from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL. Their score on the qADAM questionnaire, which asks men about things like sex drive and energy, rose from 23.9 to 31.7.
The 2025 study, led by Gerald Haase with Wolkodoff on the team, followed 11 younger men aged 25 to 50. Free testosterone went from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL, and SHBG (the protein that binds testosterone in the blood) fell from 29.1 to 27.4 nmol/L.
Both research teams chose a tincture. For a man picking a format, that is the form with human numbers behind it.
Pine pollen supplement for men, in their own words
The reports men give are consistent across forums and reviews. Stronger morning wood is the one mentioned most, usually within the first few weeks. More drive comes next, both in the bedroom and in the gym.
The chemistry has a long paper trail. Scots pine pollen was the first plant in which testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione were isolated, reported by Šaden-Krehula in 1971. For a closer look at what men say after a bottle or two, read our pine pollen review.
Why we chose a spagyric Pinus radiata tincture
Mara's Pine Pollen is wild-harvested, cracked-cell Pinus radiata pollen made into a spagyric tincture. We went that way for reasons you feel in a normal week.
The whole plant is in the bottle. The spagyric process returns the minerals to the extract after the first stage, so the liquid carries what the pollen held, in a form you can take straight away.
There is nothing to mix. You put a dropper under your tongue and hold it 20 to 30 seconds, then swallow. If you'd rather, it goes into water, coffee, juice or a protein shake. The taste is soft and lightly earthy, with a faint sweetness, so it disappears into most drinks.
It fits a routine. One bottle lasts 30 to 50 days at 1 to 2 droppers a day. That is a bottle on the bathroom shelf, one in the gym bag, and no shaker to wash.
It is kept in dark Miron glass. The extract stays sealed from air, and the glass keeps light off it every time you open the cupboard.

Pine Pollen – Spagyric Pine Pollen Tincture
50 ml dropper bottle. Wild-harvested, cracked-cell Pinus radiata pollen.
Add to bagHow men take it
Take 1 to 2 droppers a day. One in the morning under the tongue, or stirred into your coffee, is the easy habit, and a second can go in before training or in the evening. Simple ingredients: premium quality extract. It is a 50 ml tincture (an alcohol extract), so a few drops in a glass of water is an easy way in if you want a milder start.
Give it the full eight weeks the researchers used before you judge it. Two bottles at one dropper a day covers that stretch with room to spare.
Pine Pollen considerations
Contains alcohol. If you're pregnant, nursing or taking medication, ask your doctor before using it.
Questions people ask
What is the best pine pollen supplement?
Look for a named species, cracked-cell pollen, a wild-harvested source, a clear extraction method and dark glass. A spagyric tincture in dark Miron glass covers all five, and a tincture is the form both pilot studies in men used.
Is a pine pollen tincture better than capsules?
For daily use, yes. A tincture goes under the tongue or into a drink in seconds, with no handful of capsules and no powder to stir, and the published human studies used a tincture.
What do pine pollen supplement reviews say?
Men most often report stronger morning wood and more drive, usually after a few weeks of daily use.
How long does a bottle of Mara Pine Pollen last?
A 50 ml bottle lasts 30 to 50 days at 1 to 2 droppers a day.
