Pine Pollen and Ashwagandha Together (How Men Stack Them)

Plenty of men who take pine pollen and ashwagandha found one first and added the other a few months later. A man on pine pollen in the morning picks up ashwagandha for the evening, or the reverse. The two come from opposite ends of the plant world. One is the pollen of a pine tree, the other is the root of a small shrub from India, and the studies done on each in men measured different things. Men who stack them build the day around the pine pollen.

Pine pollen vs ashwagandha

Pine pollen is the fine yellow dust a pine tree releases from its male cones each spring. Each grain carries two small air sacs so it can drift on the wind. Mara's comes from Pinus radiata. In China it is called song hua fen and appears in herbal texts going back to the Tang dynasty. It is still listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition). Korean cooks press it into songhwa dasik tea cakes.

Ashwagandha is Withania somnifera, an evergreen shrub of the nightshade family that grows 35 to 75 cm tall in the drier parts of India, the Middle East and Africa. The part people use is the root. The Sanskrit name joins ashva (horse) and gandha (smell), after the horsey odor of the fresh root. It has been part of Ayurveda, India's traditional medicine, for thousands of years, according to the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

So one is a tree pollen gathered in spring and the other is a dug root. They don't overlap in source, taste or history, which is part of why men put them together.

What the studies in men found

Pine pollen

The pine pollen story in science starts in 1971, when Šaden-Krehula and colleagues isolated testosterone, epitestosterone and androstenedione from Scots pine pollen. It was the first plant in which those hormones were found.

Two pilot studies in men followed much later. In the first, Wolkodoff and colleagues gave 10 men aged 47 to 78 a pine pollen tincture for 8 weeks. Their average total testosterone went from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL. Their qADAM score, a questionnaire men fill in about drive, energy and mood, rose from 23.9 to 31.7. A 2025 pilot by Haase and colleagues followed 11 younger men, aged 25 to 50, for 8 weeks. Free testosterone, the share not bound up in the blood, went from 10.48 to 11.72 ng/dL, and SHBG (the protein that binds testosterone) fell from 29.1 to 27.4 nmol/L. Both studies were published in the Annals of Clinical and Medical Case Reports.

Outside the lab, the reports from men are consistent. They talk about stronger morning wood and more drive after a few weeks of daily use.

Ashwagandha

In Lopresti et al. 2019 (American Journal of Men's Health), 43 overweight men aged 40 to 70 took an ashwagandha extract for 8 weeks and a placebo for another 8 weeks, in random order. On ashwagandha, their testosterone rose 14.7% more than on placebo, and DHEA-S rose 18% more.

Wankhede et al. 2015 (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition) put 57 men aged 18 to 50 with little lifting experience on an 8 week resistance program. Half took 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice a day, and the researchers tracked strength and testosterone against a placebo group.

Total testosterone rose from 362.5 to 448.4 ng/dL in 8 weeks.

Why men take pine pollen and ashwagandha together

Men who stack the two describe them as covering different parts of the day. Pine pollen is the one they tie to the morning and to training, and to the drive and morning wood they mention most. Ashwagandha is the one they tie to the evening, after work. Neither study above tested the two together, so the stack comes from how men use them, and most of them start with pine pollen and add ashwagandha second. For more on what men say about pine pollen alone, read pine pollen for men.

How men who take both build the day

The routine men describe most often looks like this:

  1. Morning, before coffee or before training: 1 to 2 droppers of pine pollen tincture under the tongue. Hold it there 20 to 30 seconds, then swallow.
  2. Through the day: nothing extra. The bottle stays on the bench or in the gym bag.
  3. Later in the day, with dinner or in the evening: ashwagandha, the way the men who take it report using it.

Training days follow the same shape. Some men move the pine pollen dropper to 20 minutes before a session instead of first thing. The point is a fixed time they don't skip. Under the tongue in the morning takes less than a minute, and the soft, lightly earthy taste with a faint sweetness is easy to take before breakfast.

Make pine pollen the anchor, and take it as a tincture

Raw pine pollen grains have a tough outer wall. Mara's starts with cracked-cell Pinus radiata pollen, meaning that wall has been broken open before extraction. The extract is spagyric. The pollen is extracted, and the minerals left behind are returned to the liquid, so the whole plant ends up in the bottle.

The tincture is kept in dark Miron glass. Dark amber glass is a step in the right direction, and dark Miron glass is the gold standard because it keeps light off the extract for the life of the bottle. At 1 to 2 droppers a day, one 50 ml bottle lasts 30 to 50 days, so two bottles cover the 8 weeks the pilot studies ran. A dropper bottle also travels: gym bag, desk drawer, shaving kit. Powders and capsules mean scoops, shakers and counting, and the dropper is one squeeze. Simple ingredients: premium quality extract.

Questions men ask about the stack

Can you take pine pollen and ashwagandha together?

Many men do. The usual pattern is pine pollen tincture in the morning or before training and ashwagandha later in the day.

Which should I start with, pine pollen or ashwagandha?

Most men in the stack started with pine pollen and added ashwagandha later. Starting with one at a time lets you know what each one feels like in your own week.

Are ashwagandha and pine pollen the same kind of plant?

No. Pine pollen is the pollen of a pine tree, and ashwagandha is the root of Withania somnifera, a shrub used in Ayurveda.

How long were the pine pollen studies?

Both pilot studies in men ran for 8 weeks. One bottle of Mara's tincture lasts 30 to 50 days at 1 to 2 droppers a day.
