First Date Nerves (What to Do in the Hour Before)

Most first date nerves sit in the hour before and the first ten minutes. A plan for that window, from the greeting to a one-spray ritual before you walk in.

First date nerves are close to universal. In a 2023 OnePoll survey of 2,000 UK adults for Specsavers, 89% said they got the jitters before a first date, and 70% were nervous about the greeting itself. That second number is the useful one. Most of the fear sits in a short window: the last hour before you leave, the walk to the door, the first hello and the first few minutes of talk. Get that window right and the rest of the evening usually takes care of itself.

The steps below come from what people on dating forums and dating sites say they do, plus our own ritual for the walk-in.

Where first date nerves come from

The same Specsavers survey asked people what they feared. The top answers were having nothing to talk about, long awkward silences, the other person being boring and getting stood up. Further down were splitting the bill and getting food down yourself. Almost every item on that list is about the start of the date or about not knowing what comes next.

So the fix is mostly logistics. Decide the small things in advance and your head has less to chew on while you wait.

Plan the first 10 minutes

You don't need a script for the whole night. You need one for the opening. Work out three things before you leave the house.

  • How you'll greet them (a hug, a handshake, a wave from the table). Pick one so you aren't deciding in the doorway.
  • What you'll order first, so you aren't reading a menu while they sit there.
  • Your first question, ideally something from their profile or the messages you've already swapped.

Pick a place you know. Bustle's panel of therapists and coaches, including psychiatrist Dr. Jared Heathman, suggested a public spot you're familiar with and a loose time limit, so the date has a natural end if it isn't working.

“Oh wow, the saliva flow.”

Arrive 10 minutes early

Ten minutes is enough to find the bathroom, choose a seat where you can see the door, and stop feeling like the new person in the room. You get to settle while the place is still unfamiliar to them. If you're the one waiting, the greeting happens on your ground, and you can stand up to meet them instead of hunting for them across a crowded bar.

Much more than ten and you're just checking your phone at an empty table.

Walk the last few blocks

Park further away or get off the bus a stop early. Headspace's guide to first date nerves points to research showing a 10-minute brisk walk lifts mood, and the walk burns off the restless energy that otherwise comes out as jiggling knees under the table. People on the r/datingoverforty forum describe their own versions of this: dancing around while getting ready, a short workout earlier in the day, singing loudly in the car on the way.

What to eat and drink before a first date

Eat something small an hour or two before. Arriving starving makes you fixate on the food, and a full meal makes you sluggish. Skip anything messy if you're worried about spilling it on yourself, since that made the top 10 fear list.

In Psychology Today, Dr. Bruce Y. Lee suggests cutting back on caffeine, sugar and alcohol before a date because they can make nervousness feel worse. Forum opinion on alcohol splits. Some people have one drink to take the edge off, others wait until they're sitting with their date. If you do drink, one is plenty. Water on the way there is never a bad idea.

How to calm first date nerves in the car or the bathroom

Give yourself a two-minute reset right before you go in. The car works, so does the bathroom at the venue if you've arrived early. A version built from the forum and expert tips:

  1. Take four or five slow breaths, longer out than in.
  2. Shake out your hands and roll your shoulders.
  3. Name five things you can see and four you can hear (the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding trick Bustle's experts mentioned).
  4. Check your teeth and collar in the mirror once, then stop looking.
  5. Call or text a friend a one-line update. Forum posters say a quick call on the way over warms up their voice for conversation.

Do it the same way every time, so it becomes the signal that the date is starting.

One spray before you walk in

Our own ritual for that last minute is Dragon Breath, a 50 ml mouth spray of chilcuague root extract. Chilcuague (Heliopsis longipes), also called golden root, is a root from Central Mexico, and the Mara team wild-harvests it from growth zones we select with the help of local elders. You can read the full story of the plant in our chilcuague guide.

One spray onto the tongue. For a second it tastes earthy and a little peppery. Within about 10 seconds a bright, electric buzz spreads across the tongue and mouth, and your mouth floods. One customer, on camera after a first spray, said "Oh wow, the saliva flow." Another, in a reaction video moments after one spray, said "Definitely energized." The buzz settles into a clean, fresh feeling that lingers, and you walk through the door switched on and present.

A fresh mouth for the greeting comes as a bonus. If they lean in for a hug, you're ready.

A spray suits this moment better than anything loose or powdered. It lives in your jacket pocket, one or two sprays is all it takes, and the extract stays sealed in Miron violet glass, away from air and light, for 250+ sprays. Start with one spray. Once you know the feeling you can go up to five.

First date nerves tips for the conversation

Having nothing to say was the number one fear in the Specsavers poll, and 34% of people who'd had a bad date said that was what went wrong. Bring three openers in your back pocket. A few that work:

  • Something specific from their profile or your messages ("You said you'd just been to Lisbon. What did you eat?").
  • A question about the place, if you picked it ("Have you been here before? The fries are why I suggested it").
  • A light this-week question, such as the best thing they've watched or cooked lately.

Saying you're a bit nervous is fine. Dr. Lee lists honesty about nerves as one of his tips, since it often relaxes both people, and your date is very likely nervous too. Ask follow-up questions and listen to the answers.

The recommendation on the product page: if you're pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or allergic to plants in the daisy family, ask your doctor before using it.
